Timber values

None of the sawmills that I have dealt with will consider sycamore unless it has been winter felled.

The Butt that I sold was extremely rippled and was a fair size, the guy who bought it was letting a yard to us so he got it cheap:sad:. He showed me a table made with the stuff, it was amazing it had an almost 3D effect.

I reckon milling the odd nice log yourself is a the way to go, one guy who bought 8 ton of wood of me a few years back sells wany edged planks at craft fairs and shows ant the like. People are lapping them up, at top dollar too. :001_smile:

Here's his site http://www.falkirkwood.co.uk/

this is the only forum i have ever been on. I have to say it is really good to be able to discuss things like this with like minded people. I have been milling for about 10 tyrs now, which i know isnt THAT long, but its still great to learn new stuff all the time. Really interesting stuff, asp. regarding prices/ variation of through the country- never knew it called curly before either! one of my absoloutely fave timbers, but one of the hardest to deal with!! Thanks for all the info etc etc!

Interesting thread..

I'd be interested to know...if you came across something worth milling, had no specific projects or customers but hoped to sell it on as air dried at some point in the future, what dimensions would you mill to? Most people I've seen converting timber tend to only ever saw through and through, often to thicknesses 3" or so. I've always wondered about that..surely it's going to take a 3" slab 2 or 3 years to dry out properly?
