found me some freaky fungi

it is NOT I obliqous, which only forms a black encrusted anamorph on the tree usualy birches, the sexual stage is a mass over the rootplate.

 

your bracket is very very much of an aged benzoin, I will try to find you an image, the black with brown band is very typical IMO

Just browsing the net and found similar photos relating to an earlier arbtalk thread called mystery yew fungus...the appearance from the photographs and the description of the fungi from the arbtalker who posted relates strongly with my own recollections, however i am no expert in the identification of fungi , this is an area however that has dramatically improved since i have been on this forum . thanks for passing on your wisdom guys.

Thanks Tony but what do you make of the mossy like growth on the stem of the second photograph in my first post?

 

So busy looking at the brackets I hadnt even noticed that at the front of the image! lol:blushing:

 

and your right, that does indeed look like the same culprit, :thumbup1:

 

 

so guessing you have both here, I need to find that one too now:thumbup1:
