found me some freaky fungi

Can anyone identify this fungi i found going on the base of a Taxus last week ? In the first photograph i pulled off the fruiting body and put it on the top of the stem to see the cross sectional area, it was very spongy to the touch almost like moss. the other photos are close ups of the branch ends which all had a crusty appearance.

Strange, got me stumped. Ive only ever seen leitaporus on Taxus.

Was the base of the tree located next to a verge or foot path ? looks very much like Canis cacas to me , can be very common, only a sniff test would confirm findings.

That had me for a few seconds...i was thinking canis...that's a dog isn't it, ah the penny drops...no it wasn't a dog egg, and it appears unlike photos of the fungi Tony suggested , however the fruiting body was old and a bit manky?

Sorry, I do suffer with impulsive turrets syndrome its been a curse all my life and with age it is slowly improving, just couldn't stop myself glad you weren't offended .

Just been trying to find out what this is over dinner...suddenly wondered if the black exudate may be unrelated to the fruiting body...could this be phytophthora? as many trees exibit a similar flux from wounds?

May have found the id? the nearest fit i can find is Inonotus obliquus but it is usually found on birch , can anyone confirm or not?

it is NOT I obliqous, which only forms a black encrusted anamorph on the tree usualy birches, the sexual stage is a mass over the rootplate.

 

your bracket is very very much of an aged benzoin, I will try to find you an image, the black with brown band is very typical IMO

Ischnoderma benzoinum, IMO (95% certain) is what you have
