Some things are totally unforeseen I suppose. I've never told anyone who works for me not to turn up on a site by themselves and start hacking trees down - I never felt that I had to and it wouldn't really have occurred to me.

The difference is that your staff are under your direct control, they know what the rules are and that following them is a condition of continued employment. Managing volunteers is something else, you need to expect the unforeseen.

Ooh, don't get me started on volunteers...

 

I was responsible for 80 of them at one point, and yes, they sometimes did some slightly odd things. Over the course of 7 years I don't remember any of them turning up in their own time (OK, all volunteering is done is their own time, but you know what I mean) to do anything, never mind cut trees down.

 

'Friends of...' groups, now they really are a cause for concern. I had one of those apply for a grant, get the money, hire a mini 3060 and dumper and start work on a (public) site all without breathing a word of it to anyone. Life is funny sometimes.

The worst offenders are the rouge volunteer ranger type, they get a badge and considder themselves high sherif of whatever part of the countryside they consider their fiefdom.

True! I can remember 2 particular vol rangers (both older gentlemen) who were lucky not to get their lights punched out - one waving his walking stick and shout obscenities and another trying to direct traffic straight into the middle of a forest fire during an evacuation.
