We produce sweet chestnut fencing materials here in Sussex. It's all winter cut and can be supplied peeled. We've got plenty of chestnut on the deck ready for this summer, just finishing off the last acre today! I have been looking at chestnut fencing as will be putting in new fencing (our old ones are snapping like crazy you only have to lean again the softwood one's we bought at countrywide tops are still good but bottoms completely rotten been in the ground 5-6yrs tops )so may just give you a ring in about a months time have noted your number as will be shopping around for prices we are looking for 8ft stakes this thread has made very interesting reading

The softwood just isn't lasting. We've got a lot of local contractors who are fed up with taking the blame for the fence failing. It's not the way it's been put up but the poor quality materials the customers are asking for. The new softwood posts come with a guarantee but that doesn't cover the cost of the installation so you pay more but are no better off in the long run. Chestnut all the way!

Lots of fencing boys gone bust down here over claims. The posts they were selling five or six years ago were dreadful and have all failed. Not sure what today's ones are like. We've been using some 15 year guarantee ones from Cornwall farmers. They are quarter round and look good so far. Time will tell.

 

We need more chestnut coppice in the uk,, especially outside the south east. Down here in devon there is virtually none.

Old topic but... Im looking to install 450m of stock fencing, sheep netting with 2 strands of plain wire.  What sort of money am I looking at to do the job with split chestnut posts/strainers?  Nothing complicated, easy access, site clear and level and old fence is gone.  Also if anyone has a price for same but in post and rail (chestnut?) Thanks in advance Craig
