"Money's not on it mate"

Hi mate, you really should have a contract of employment, I think by law you should have one but I'm not sure. It protects you and your employer. If you have it in your contract that you work 40 hrs per week at £10 per hour and then and hours over that will be paid at £15 then you know where you are. When I had an employee I had a contract with him, if he did overtime I gave him time off in return. To be fair we never really did much. Now I just use self employed lads, we do job and knock, most days done by by 3pm, some days like today done by 12, then if we do a late one they are cool about it. I don't work them to the bone as I don't think you should exploit them as I didn't like being exploited.

As an employer I ask if the guys can stay stay late. If they can't we work something out.

Same thing in reverse if they ask to go early or take time in the day to clear something up I will try do my best to accomodate.

Got a give a little to get a little.

I will buy supper if it goes real late or hand over cash to reward efforts.

Seems to work well here in Canada.
