why 30 tonne?

that would mean you having a 5.5" x 2.75" ram working @ 200 bar

with a 50cc pump running @ 1800 rpm (540 with a step up gearbox of 3.4:1)

cycle time from start to finish of stroke (extension & retraction ready for next log) of 20 secs.

From my experience the splitting wedge / knife is the key to performance not the tonnage.

Do the professionally built splitters such as Balfor (or Posch) not use some clever

valving that "injects" returning oil flow so as to speed up the ret cycle.

A local tinkerer who built himself a splitter took such a valve block apart and admitted he could not properly understand its workings.

Is this not also how some splitters have a faster "approach" stroke, only slowing down to working speed and pressure when resistence is met?

Plus auto ret helps.

Hi Difflock,

yes, they use a system similar to the regen on loader tip circuits.

If we call the port on the base of the cylinder A and on the chrome rod end of the cylinder B.

When the ram is extending oil is pumped into A to make the ram extend. Oil comes out of B as the ram extends. This oil from B is forced back into port A almost doubling the flow, hence the very high speed. The works because the chrome rod uses some of the surface area in the cylinder, so more force is applied to the side of the cylinder doing the pushing.

That essentially is how the 2 speed works, and we can get a complete cycle time on high speed of about 12 seconds on a 30 ton PTO splitter with a 1.5m stroke.

Hopefully the above makes sense!

The little block that does it is circled.
