Not if you manage the rope properly. If you are on a short rope in a big crown, how do you get down after you've stuck an 020 in your arm?

 

I certainly dont plan on waiting for a groundie to come up if I did get into trouble, so I always have a rope long enough to get down in a single pitch.

 

 

i understand what you are saying though pete. i do manage my rope properly. maybe i just dont do as big a trees as you guys. i have a 40m rope that i have used about 6 times in ten years. always managed just fine with the smaller one. i have never ran out of rope on limbs.

 

i would say an average hardwood round here is 60feet, so my rope does.

maybe i am a minimilist, even if i dont have the exact stuff for the job or you get break downs i always find a way to get the job done. i am not trying to be smart i just seem to manage.

Cool. I have a 30m that I use for probably 80% of my trees, but I still like to have the longer ropes when needed.

the shorter ropes are much better for towing aswell, also to make up the length when the turfer wire is too short. big ropes are heavy too. i am getting on in years.

I use a long strop which is a short length of Yale (XTC?)

It's only about 10m long, but it's damned handy - can use it end on end when climbing as well, good in conifers with loads of branches.

My main rope is too long for 80% of jobs we do, it's an arbormaster 45m job and it's more often than not a total pain in the arse.
