My first forestry job

So it all started out with a family member who was on a cs38 course talking to the warden at a local national trust property, he was in need of a contractor to fell a section of woodland in a woodlands scheme to create a coppice. When heard about this I jumped at the chance an within the day contacted the warden and within the week visited the site and secured the contract!

And today we started the job, so here's a photo diary of what we are doing.

The site

The trees compromise of ash, silver birch and sycamore mainly.

I have set up a skyline allowing us to haul all of the timber to a loading area where we sned up and cut to length.

We are able to haul 3 or 4 logs at a time cutting out a lot of back braking and time!!

At the end of today we have hauled a reasonable amount that will be being trailered off to a pick up site for a lorry!

Also does anyone know if this is a burr and is it worth anything to anyone if it is?

Looks like a fun site, Good on you for getting in there and acting fast (goes a long way normally). So what were you using for the haul back on the skyline?

Yeah it is great really enjoying it!! And despite the fact we don't really have any heavy machinery it's great find ways round it! We are using a land rover on the pull line as I don't have a winch:/ it's working well!!

Its probably quicker than a winch too :thumbup1: Just pay attention to the spar tree as over a few 100 pulls it can fail at the root plate. We had it happen a couple of times on the marshes we were working on.

Yeah way quicker and more power just means a man driving! Yeah we have pretty much finished with the one we are using, changing haul direction tomorrow! But have all my guys on alert for it to fail because ya never know.

Oh and here's a quick diagram of my setup for anyone that's interested!

What sort of distances are you covering with the sky line ? What lenght of timber are you pulling out ? How are you getting the timber to the sky line ?

Well today was the first time of trying it we were covering about 20meters today tomorrow it will be a longer pull! Either 8 foot lengths 4 at a time might try more tomorrow. Or 1 or 2 trees at a time way more productive pulling out whole as you can probably get an average of 6-8 lengths from a whole tree! I have a lift line that extends out to the timber and have a mechanical advantage system to lift the butt off the ground. Urmm today we probably got out 10 tonne with 2 people. But we will get quicker just had some communication problems due to noisy land rove engine:P so gonna use radios tomorrow!

Golly that looks complicated.

Haha that what my groundy said to me and then said it wouldn't work and now loves it:D
