Bar & chain oil questions

I'm really going to disagree with the use of motor oil. It will do nothing to help your pump in your saw. Plus the complications of it being not tacky enough to stick to the chain long enough to do its job....

There have been many questions over using other oils in saws and all have the same answer.

Can't you just sell a few litres of the motor oil so you can buy chain oil. I'm sure a few people would buy it?

I like your thinking about selling some oil on and purchase some proper bar oil. I just thought its less hassle to just buy some stp as the oil i get is longlife fully synthetic and free"" etc. Thanks for all the advice & i,am very greatful for your replys cheers

Some of the operator manuals actually state that motor oil can be used in the absence of chain oil! It doesn't have the klingon agents:lol: in it - reckon I would just use it without the expensive STP otherwise it will start costing more than chain oil!

Not sure of Riches thoughts on it damaging the oil pump, these motor oils are designed to go round car valve gear that is operating faster and under much higher tolerances than the humble oil pump on your chainsaw.

You may find that the engine oil will react with your previously used oil so flush the tank out before using it or drain it thoroughly - the stuff can gloopify (thats a technical term) and stop the flow!

Sorry should have been more clear again. :001_rolleyes::biggrin:

It's the gloopyfy that I meant on the pump. Therefore blocking it up and doing nothing.

Have seen before when people have changed oils and then it stops oiling. A quick cleanup and all is well again.

Sorry again.

No need to appologise Rich, just a bit baffled by the statement - yup, seen the effects of gloop, almost as bad as clag and grot!....sounds like a TV police show!

Here in Portugal and also Spain , there is a roaring trade in Azeite oil. basiclly Olive oil ,normally it is the lowgrade stuff that cant be sold for food use etc.

The problem I have found is it has sediment in it. so I would rather pay the extra 5 euros more and get proper oil.

The best oil I have ever used was a container of chain oil that I got in Lincoln ,UK before I moved to Portugal about 6 years ago, it was `Extra Tacky Chain Oil` made by Withams of Lincoln.....amazing oil.
