Much better than the quad on bad terain,& they are very reliable, treat it gently & you can get near 40mpg,but used harder about 30mpg.:001_smile:

As I drive like an old woman I would want to be getting between 35~40mpg which is better than my Cabstar.

So, the Jimny is

cheap to buy

Cheap to insure group 7

Reliable "Bombproof"

Pretty good mpg especially considering its a 4wd

Better than a quad at towing a chipper

Oh and did I mention its cheap:thumbup:

eBay and autotrader here I come.

A word of advice when looking, steer clear of the modded ones, there often a bit cheaper than a non modded one but you don't know what they have done with it and how hard it's been driven

Yeah, hadn't thought about that!

Makes sense, will defo be getting a plain Jane then stick some all terrain tyres on her. Reckon that will be enough for what I want.

And maybe a winch

Oh and a snorkel

And 2" lift kit

Errrrr and some axle spacers

Only kidding reckon tires will be enough for what I want.

Bf goodrich, take it they are still the daddies of at tires???:confused1:

Haha when you see what others have done to them it's tempting to do all that . I do believe they are although the general grabber at's are pretty good too, popular size for standard jimny's seems to be 195,80,15 to give a little more ground clearance than standard size

As you most likely know, they have a similar trans setup to an old 3 series landy,But the 'freewheeling' hubs on the front are activated when you select your 4wd in the cab,(I think it works on solenoids).

Mine has proved itself as a usefull little car,a definate David rather than goliath,It can get a medium sized chipper through some narrow gaps,(it has a very small turning circle too),on terrain that your average 'black jap thunderclap' motor cant even get to...

The hubs work on a vaccum system which again can be problematic if not maintained and is expensive to replace pipes if they break but if they do break the cheapest and best option in my opinoin is buy some free wheeling hubs, just over £100 and is an easy 5 min bolt on job

Thanks guys, sounds like you two really know your stuff!

I have been watching a load of YouTube videos and I am staggered at what they can do!

There's no way I would be taking them across the sorts of terrain some loons do!

Good to know that they are a more than capable machine.

One video pitted a defender against the plucky jimny from what I could make out the Landy had meaty treads and jimny had bog standard roadies.

Given a slight lift and some aggressive treads the jimny looked as though it could of followed the landy all daylong
