well, it's possible that the secondary girdling roots on top of the main roots in your picture are constricting the function of these primary roots, and as such, they may have become weak and less able to cope with the presence of the mycelium of the Meripilus.

 

Meripilus tends to decay root wood from underneath, as this is older wood and less vigorous.

If constriction or compaction or mechanical damage occurs to roots, they are prone to attack from pathogens.

Meripilus on a Beech from earlier today, there was no sign of it a week ago, fruiting around the entire circumference!

Noticed exactly the same on an old beech stump at my yard today, loads of it! And like you say, wasn't there a week ago. I'll take a pic tomorrow...
