The Sycamore is completely hollow and was rotten well into the crown (according to the farm who cleared the tree from his field for us). There is about 4 inches of wood at the top and 2 inches at the base with nothing in the middle. We are in two minds about the remaining stem. Leave a pollard or fell.

I went for a walk in Oxleas woods, nr Shooters Hill last weekend. Spotted this on a fallen trunk.

 

Did think of picking it as I have never cooked with it before but it was on a popular dog walkers route. It was also at a convenient height for most breeds so thought best to leave it...

Cheers Tony. It was about 12 inches across. I have started looking a bit more up the woods as me and Haakon forage. I seem to notice them more on damp days, not sure why though?

 

Couldn't miss that one though! Beautiful colour.
