Pseudoinonotus dryadeus (Inonotus dryadeus it was formerly known as). Causes a white rot - a rather slow one, too. Makes oaks buttress out in a pronounced fashion - known commonly as the Eiffel Tower fungus (plus other names). :)

 

As a heads up try not to bash an entire bracket off if it is large - take photos and get a little slice (like a cake).

And the reason for not bashing the whole bracket off Chris?

Will the fungi then turn all it attention and energy into wood degradation as apposed to some on fruiting and sporolation?
