i am of similar breed stocks, except younger and more handsome lol

i just pass on the work to someone with the relevant qualifications and insurance and they pass me the cutting work. I know what you are saying though, but i would stick to the cutting mate, you obviously know what you are doing in that department.:001_smile:

Hahaha, you have a better physique but I,m not sure about that red beard Stevie lol. It may be a bit risky, but it,ll cost me nothing to have a look and even if I pass it on I will leave him a nice shiney business card for any future work he may want done.:001_cool:

on this sort of subject;

I know of at least 2 companies near me who advertise / have sign written on vehicle the fact that they are "Tree Specialists". Now, in my mind I believed that to be a specialist in a subject meant that any advice you give could be held up in court and you should be prepared to be called as an expert witness, and are then fully liable for any advice you give.

these 2 generic companies I know for a fact that all staff are only basic NPTC and IPAF certified. Does this make them calling themselves "tree specialists" a little bit risky??

This is pure curiosity from an article I read about a completley different industry. Whereby a company was fined for false advertising etc for simply using the word "specialist" when they were merely competent in what they did.

What would you call enough, I reckon £80-£100 what do you think ?

I have a min charge of £145, thats for the very basics and single tree. No more than 2 hrs inc site visit within 10 miles. Any more is £65 hr and 45p mile travelling. TPO bits we do as part of the overall job. A lot can depend on if you have the contract work as well as the report.

There's plenty of "Tree specialists" in all areas, not just ours, Frank.

I can think of about 8 locally, off the top of my head.

Some are more "specialist" than others.

My take on it is that you are a "specialist" if you "specialise" in a particular line of work. :001_smile:

It says "tree specialists" on my van, and I do not have a problem with that.

We don't do anything other than tree work contracting.

No gravelling, tarmac, block paving, lawns, ponds, fencing, landscaping, grass cutting, power washing, rubbish removing, etc, etc, etc.....

Nor do I take money from customers for written reports and advice and I do not advertise that I provide that service.

I am a contractor specialising in carrying out tree work, ergo, I am specialist.

I doubt that the "specialists" jack of all trades have even heard of NPTC, Lantra, IPAF, etc.

Stockers, I would think carefully before charging a customer for written advice if you hav'nt the right letters after your name and professional indemnity insurance to back you up.

As Frank correctly points out, written advice, that a customer has paid for, has to stand up in court.

My two penneth, anyway.:001_smile:

Advice does not have to be paid for nor written. Contractors and their staff can give advice without even knowing it. As you say you are a "specialist" so anything you say would be taken in the context that you are more qualified than, a Prudent citizen. Courts will take the view of a prudent citizen and would assume therefore that when,Mrs Smith says "so that tree is now safe" and gets the reply "it should be for a couple of year's, Thats advice.

I keep messing up and underpricing surveys and am shocked at what some consultants charge. At least £100, but if it only takes 5 mins and the tree is knackered you can knock some off the price to do the works. You've got to pay for that insurance..

You've contracted other guys so you know what they charge, charge the similar. It does depend on the job and if there is possibly work to be had.

Here are some pics, the customer has been reported for building a summer house for his kids and when the council made a visit they said it has to come down and all the decking may have to be taken up if an independant tree report was,nt in his favour. I feel for the fella cos he,s spent a fortune and it all looks fantastic. I can understand the councils point of view on the first Sycamore if it had,nt been damaged in previous years, but in my opinion it,s unsafe anyway and should be removed.......Youre opinions gratefuly received.......As for the Hornbeam and Sycamores on the boundaries........Again, opinions gratefuly received.
