Its the first I've heard of it to be honest, it was only when i saw "Equipment should be marked for unique identification" in the assessment schedule that I thought i'd ask. Im sure theres a few ways of complying

 

That bit just means, stick a number or your initials on it somehow.

As I understand it, provided each bit of kit is uniquely identifiable, it doesn't matter how you've marked it. Numbers, colours, whatever, as long as it's not like, "the prussick with cow **** on it", and as long as there isn't repetition.

Most krabs come with s/n already. Ropes can be labelled with the aforementioned shrink tubing. We use white tubing with s/n written on and clear tubing on top for waterproofing.
