Decay from included bark combined with an overextended limb structure. Whether or not it was visible or should have been noticed pre-casualty depends on several factors, like the scope of previous work etc.

I would not want to be held responsible for not probing each and every dodgy fork.

Definitely hard to say what the previous guy should have seen or done--Golden Rule applies here.

Certainly most of the defects look internal, and the storm was a primary cause of failure. "Sudden limb drop" is doubtful here, as it does not apply to tearouts.

"Overextension" recently added to ISA's TRAQ training; somewhat controversial as it's not always easy to identify.

Hi

First time post here so apologies if in the wrong place.

I have attached photos of branches that fell from an oak tree onto a car causing considerable damage. The tree was inspected by a tree surgeon 3 months prior and no issues were reported.

The branches appear to be blackened inside and I was wondering if someone could tell me whether this is some kind of disease of rot that has caused the branches to break and fall?

If so, should this have been apparent at the time of the inspection?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Regards

Russell

Hi Russell - what type of soil is the oak on - is there any history of previous branch failure from this Oak or other Oaks in that area
