i agree with what andy says about our own jobless not wanting the work but wanting the benifits, but the guys on this thread who say that they have worked abroad (immigrants), i bet where you were working you were in a minority, a couple of years ago when the bulk of eastern europeans came here they came in their thousands, in the biggest town to where i live (Llanelli) crime soared, muggings, robberies, women would hang around cashpoints and try to sell their bodies to half drunk men, and when they were lured down an alley they would be beaten and robbed by 2 or 3 waiting men, yes i suppose its the same as british guys going to work abroad, but the scale of numbers that arrived here there was never going to be enough work to go round, i believe a lot of them have moved on to places like austria where they have raised the minimum wage.

Have you seen the sign on the A55 between Wales and England.

It permanently has 'English Out' or some such thing on it in grafitti.

You have a point which in my view is not racist it's realist and you are entitled to make it.

But imagine for a moment that you were Polish and had a legal right to come to the UK. So you're earning £1.50 an hour and eating polish Heinz beans every day.

Wouldn't you 'get on your bike' if you had any bottle?

I fully agree with your sentiments, and if it was me in that situation i would probably do the same, but the reality of the situation is that there are thousands if not millions of people on JSA being forced to do workfare for their benefits when all they really want is a real job so they can feel like a useful member of society, the generally held belief that people on benefits are all scroungers is misinformed certainly there will be some but i believe the vast majority would do anything to get work, the sad fact of the matter is there is just not enough jobs to go around, allowing more foreigners into the country somehow doesn't seem to be the answer IMHO.

Good luck to ya! I'm sick of hearing that "our jobs" are being taken by people who are coming in from Europe. there is plenty of work out there if we want it! you only have to check out silkyfox's thread.

Hi Jon

unfortunately not everyone has Silkys skills, there are very few unskilled vacancies about, with the added competition from more foreigners coming to the uk the dream of a Real job for the unemployed indiginess population becomes just that a Dream, sad but true.

By the time I was 20 years old (1980) I had flown on Freddie Laker to Los Angeles with £50 in my pocket, no credit card, no email…it was poste restante back then. You waited 2 months for a letter from home if you were lucky. No onward flights no nothing. I had no back up and no support whatsoever.

John Lennon got shot while I was there. I arrived in Australia with 1 American dollar in my pocket and left there 18 months later and followed the hippy trail back to the UK overland through Asia. Gap years, round the world tickets, and the term backpacker or backpacker hostels weren’t invented yet. I celebrated my 21st birthday after I had done all that.

That was hard. I don’t have much time for small minded regionalism.

You either know how to get off your arse or you don’t.
