I imagine there will be a few sage smiles and shaking of heads, but this begins with a second hand, clean ish looking 357xp from Ebay, £230... didn't check out thoroughly on receipt and now two months down the line will fire up, but not idle. :confused1: Carb shot? Megabucks repair? All suggestions welcome. It looks to be about 6 years old

It sounds like one of the first 357s with the automatic decompression ( no button to press in ). I had one for a couple of years, its now used for spare parts for the latest 357 which has not got the automatic decompression. A lot better. It wasnt worth getting the old one repaired.

1st thing take off the exaust and look at piston, if you have a digital camra take a pic and post it

 

if all is well there then consider

 

does it have an auto decompressor or mauell???

 

get a torch and loook how dirty the fuel is change filter

 

could keep going i love my 357 m2 the new one not as good though

I had a fairly new 357 that wouldn't idle and would die when it warmed up. It sat in the naughty box for a year or so....

 

Sorted out 2 issues-

Husky dealers will throw the auto decomp away and fit a blanking plug for pence, so you can eliminate that problem easily. I had an new old pattern carb (262 spec) fitted and the saw is now fantastic. Like quite a few new 020's the 357 has a rubbish carb... replacement is your best bet.

 

(as long the piston isn't knackered)

if you pop off the exaust you can inspect the piston for scoring etc that would indicated overreving etc, look to see if spark arrester blocked and you can burn out carbon with blow torsh wile off too.

 

let us know what you see there

 

i suggest that you do it a step at a time or you can end up masking the main problem.

 

start with exaust.

Couldn't agee more, when at at the blue machine we took delivery of numerous 357xp husqies, out of say every 10 there were on average 5 picking up on the piston, as you say drop the exuast and have a look, all these were scored beyond useable again, usuall trait start and run but once warm didn't want to know. these problems were just as the 357 was coming onto the market
