Advice please - Ash Burr

Came across this Ash Burr in a woodland we look after a couple of years ago, by the time I'd asked the client if I could take it I couldnt find it again.

I'd like some advice on how to make the most of it.

Access is poor/ very wet so unlikely to get it out with wheel barrow or arb trolley.

so should I mill it with the alaskan through and through into planks (what thickness would be most stable?) Will it be unstable and crack/warp.

or should I cut it in half (longtidudinally or laterally?)

there is a line of decay on the left of the burr that would have been running from top to bottom when the tree was standing.

There is some daldinia growing on its surface all over so hopefully it wont be too far gone but 4/5ths seems pretty sound.

p.s its too wide to mill with a 36inch bar on the 660 so I may have to piece it apart any how - cut the left hand side off where the rot is and then mill?

Any advice welcome.

Dean

I tend to end up using things like this for turning. I guess my view is that you often havent got much of a clue what you are going to find in these and although milling into boards would be much more profitable if it come off alot of the time it doesn't. If you get it turned then you can tolerate alot more things and it is a quicker sale if you have the customer for it. Would be interested in buying it if you want to sell.

HI

i use quite a few Ash burrs and find the best way is to mill half of the burr and use the rest for larger items

The burr will never fully dry out in the full burr,I have had burrs which have been stored under cover for 20 years and still haven't dried

If you are interested in selling any of the burr I would be interested but another idea is if you wanted me to make something from part of the burr then we could trade for timber

how does that sound

Have a look at some of my past posts you will see the sort of thing I do

Thanks for the advice so far, If anybody Wants it give me a pm, but I had wanted to dice it up and use it myself.

Maverick what sort of diameter blanks are most useful? As I could simply mill it into blanks.

At the mo my plan is to cut it down the middle lontitudinaly then mill and open the planks like pages so that they mirror each other as I think the right hand side is better than the left.

The left side could then be peiced apart and dealt with differently.
