I always use yales whiplock, i much prefer the aesthetics of it to a standard lock stitch (like samson use). while some folk (nick from the treehouse included) use 'invisible' lock stitching i prefer the whiplock as i can easily inspect it and you can see it's there.

 

for 24 strand ropes search for Yales industrial double braid instructions (throughout the instructions it refers to double braided ropes with differing numbers of strands). before moving onto a 24 strand climbing rope maybe play some more supple ropes, yales double esterlon is a much easier rope to splice. i don't know about other 11mm 24 strands are like but Yales blaze requires a lot of effort to milk it in.
