I personally think every engine should be run-in properly and a tribology background has reinforced that opinion. Whole tank tickover - no; that's too low a load. Balls to the walls no load v bad also. My mates older 261 is a lot looser and sweeter than my 261 which has had 20 tanks thru it; took my 036 years and my VW golf tdi 90,000 miles to loosen up...!
