Advice re chainsaw for Alaskan saw mill.

I am soon to be treating my self to an Alaskin mill and will probably be looking for a 24" saw . Can anybody give me advice as to which type of saw will be best suited to the job . Thank you

Is that a 24 inch cut or a 24 inch bar? For a 24 inch cut you will need a 32 inch bar.

 

For a 24 inch bar the Makita DCS7901 is excellent. Otherwise the standard offerings from Stihl (MS460) and Husqvarna (576xp or 390xp) are well regarded.

As per Big J but in milling the benefit of a bigger saw is very non-linear (you get a lot more out of a bigger saw than just the extra .cc would suggest). Consequently, if you can run to it a 660 would make things a lot quicker, and let you upgrade to the 36" mill if you ever decide to do so - don't need a whole new mill, just the longer rails.

get the biggest power head you can, 90cc upwards

I'd go for a sthil 660 that way you'll have the power to cope with most hardwoods

i use to run a 441 on a 24 inch mill and it really didnt like it smallest saw for milling 660

always get bigger than you need, i got the 36inch from rob off here and wish id got bigger!! Running off a 66.
