Stihl 026 Stalling when tilted

Can anyone help?

Our conservation group has two Stihl 026 saws, both of which have problems.

The first problem is that when the saw is tilted forwards or the chain brake is disengaged it stalls. It runs fine at all other times, cuts well and has good power.

I have cleaned the air filter, replaced the fuel filter to no effect.

The saw has been well used over the years (1998) and not really well looked after.

My first guess is a fuel line issue, the rubber pipe is a little old now! Also I notice the AV mounts flex a little more than a rubber mount 2006 260 I have, which I am guessing may pull on the line.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,

Neil.

Think you are probably on the money. Check it out and eliminate it first before moving on.

Neil, just wondering about the description of when the saws stall - is this when the saw is picked up after having been idling on the ground for a time? It may be that the saw is loading up as a consequence of the L screw being set slightly rich. I've found this to be an issue with MS260s. Do the saws survive a roll-over test?

Thanks for the suggestions,

Spark plug was out yesterday and all looks good there. Air filter is cleaned every time i use it. I will check out the wire on Monday.

As for the roll over test, I have tried moving the saw into various positions, but it seems to only dies when moved forward or the chain brake is taken off. In my mind I think the same force operates on the saw when this happens, stressing the AV mounts.

Martin, what you say about it idling for a while is interesting, after it stalls I notice you have 10-15 seconds after it starts to release the brake and accelerate before it will stall again. Also if you apply the brake, move to a new position and release it's ok, if you stop to think about the next cut then it dies!

I have stopped using it, I do like to think about what I am doing and secondly continually restarting saw is beginning to ache a little!

Thanks Neil.
