Hello there chaps and chapets, My name is Ryan and ive been carving for a while now (just for fun) using my ms260 and 200t with standard bars and half chisel chains on I know that there are saws made especially for carving but I'd rather stick with the saws I have! (Just can't afford new toys YET) so here's my question to you fine people, can anyone recommend some bars and chains which will fit my saws? And which are the best/worst bars?

Any information you have will help me so please don't hesitate

Cheers

Rhino

Hi, as above speak to Rob D, he'll tell you what'll fit your mounts etc.

As a general rule anything over 40cc will cause excess stress on carving bars and chain. Having said that lots of carvers use 260's/ 346's with toonie bars for the finer stages of blocking out.

You'll have no problem getting carving bars to fit the 200t, you'd need to get a 1/4 sprocket if you want to use a dime tip bar and carving chain. You'd have more control with a back handle though.

Ryan I forgot to answer your question on bar makes,

Cannon and Sugi Hara are probably the best, Oregon sculptor are pretty good.

Stihl I've heard can be a bit hit and miss, but couldn't say as I've not tried them.

All of these can be bought from one of the site sponsors:001_tt2: RobD at Chainsawbars - Arbtalk.co.uk | Discussion Forum for Arborists

Hi

i use a stihl carving bar as i bought the saw + bar off a mate. so far its done a lot of hours and i have no complaints. there is quite a lot of wear on it now but given the use i have put it to in the past 6 months its understandable. they tend to be more expensive than the others which i guess is an issue, cant say for sure they are worth the extra money either. I would go for one of the zebra bars first and see if you like using a carving bar. they look pretty good for the price and if you like it you can always go for a more expensive one next time.

definitely better control with a back handle saw tho

Cheers for that dervishcarving I might get a stihl one just to try it! I have used a few carving saws with carving bars and i understand what you mean with the back handle saws but i just cant afford or warrent the purchase of a new saw. I'm just looking for a bar and chain for one of my saws so i can practice for now, I've done a lot of wood carvings with chisels as my grandfather was a wood work teacher and left me three sets of carving chisels in his will. I've done quite a few chainsaw carvings with my standard bars and finished them with chisels but I would like to try and do a few with the chainsaw only I mean it can only improve my handling skills can't it ?!

Cheers for the input
