We do lots of crane fellings, i was just thinking the other day hmmmm this crane hook is also choked? exactly like i do with my Bineers. Oh that piece was 3tons. hook was obviously fine and i pretty sure it rated lower than my 65kn bineer. i realise it static loading but just another thought to think about.

 

Ross just broke a sling, reckons nearly new, 2.5tn, acting as rigging point and didn't like the 4inchs of free fall. maybe he can tell more......... Ay Rosco??

the hooks that are designed for side loading look nothing like a biner & are designed to be srong that way but i'd thought you'd realise that when reading BSEN362, 364, 889 & of course as your craning BS7121-1?

 

what a shame these attitudes persist in tree work no wonder everyone complains arbs can't charge enough money, you sure as hell dont get these attitudes with other riggers etc, your sure the hook was rated less than your biner, well i hope you arn't a betting man, how many fingers u got left??

Yeah was using a 10 ton strop for 95 % of a big job

Had a 22kn strop with beaner for re directs

Job was running sweet

Sent heavy duty gear down and snatched a wee 200 kg piece on my strop and she had a wee drop/shock load and the strop blew out

It was strange but hey we live and learn but this lesson cost me a few bob so whoopie sling on order ASAP

@ skip yeah it weirds i have seemed to grow another arm and hand from using bineer's must be some strange reflex. or maybe its from reading BS118 95328 or XYZAFHLA84231 hmmm. i am glad the world isnt like that as it would be a boring place. Keep on reading and i keep on doing. Ps i am very very happy with my wages, maybe its the extra arm? Good luck in the Library.

Funny all this 'knots are the only way', 'slings are the best', 'biners are black death' bollocks. Obviously they all have their place as long as you take into consideration the loads and configeration used.

 

90% of the time I use biners and a straight choke. Big stuff I go back to knots - works for me. I have busted loads of gear but never blown out a steel biner used in a choked configeration
