Alder buckthorn. Do you have any pics of flowering or bark. Strawberry trees have larger fruits.

I planted some M hupehensis last year that now have that nice gloss to the fruit. If it is, then you can deffo make a jam or jelly with the fruit.

I think all of the malus varieties that have been mentioned, match based on some of the google images, but then some of the images dont match.

 

Its close enough for me to eat them, besides they taste like crabapple!

Flowering can be up to 8 weeks apart depending on time of pruning.

Clearly i dont know enough about trees!

 

but its a roadside tree, so probably doesnt get much pruning.

Agree its not red sentinel. As for it being an apple pips should confirm ID
