Sugar tree feed and freshly chipped mulch

Just wondering if anyone else has read the report on using ordinary sugar as tree feed/growth stimulant and freshly chipped mulch as opposed to composed mulches. It,s in Hort Week page 14 based on a talk by Dr Glynn Percival. Makes interesting reading; anyone tried or have any experience on this?

I seem to recall an article in the RFS journal a year or so back which supported the idea for root development.

 

I also have an Indian acquaintance, Dr. A D Karve, who is a proponent of using green leaves and sugar for manuring in the India.

 

No experience myself.

The freshly chipped mulch would still contain nutrients aswell as retaining moisture , that can go back into the ground!! as for sugar the trees rhizomorphs break it down and convert it to energy.. if i can remember from my college days!!

It just seems to simple - but it,s got to worth a try. We have large batch of Quercus palustris (about 100) on a site that could down with a pick me up and they would be easy to monitor as they are all in identical tree pits 2m x2m x3m. I feel a local trial coming on. Anyone else tried this?
