Just an update to this thread, couple of things....

 

Firstly, thanks to Steve [spud] for his advice regarding an embarrassing cock up I made while working on the saw....

 

Having decided that the cat muffler was rubbish and that the saw was hopelessly underpowered, I set about sorting out those issues, carb overhaul, twin port muffler and trying to resolve a slipping clutch....

 

Everything went well until I got to the slipping clutch, at which point I narrowly avoided trashing the pot & piston by using the incorrect locking tool.... [i'll draw the line at owning up to what I used! :blushing:]

 

Anyway, long story short, the clutch housing was full of sap, oil & years of grime, that lot cleaned out & reassembled and the service to the engine etc got everything back going again a treat.

 

As well as the muffler upgrade I've stuck a pair of oversize dogs on it and a 25" bar, which it now rips along with, while before it struggled with a 20.....

 

Having put it all back together I wanted to compare it with something, so, in for a penny, in for a pound, and I bought another second hand 460 from a lad who services small plant....

 

Although mine doesn't quite have the balls of the other one [which is a straight 460, not a 460C], I'm happy that it's as good as I can get it with the low compression piston of the C engine.

 

Anyway, the 'control' 460 is now surplus to requirements so is for sale [2 460s is a little excessive for a hobbyist......]

 

I've posted it on Arbtrader to give you guys first stab at it - 2006 Stihl MS460 Chainsaw ArbTrader Arborists Classifieds - but had no interest yet .

By the by, they're a lot of money....Jones' prices are all well and good if you're able to buy from them...! MS 460 - Powerful, fast-cutting professional chain saw

 

And I like the 460 with a 25" bar....

Yeah, i see your point, but no-one ever expects to pay MSRP, it's a completely unrealistic sum of money. And yes, i see your point, it WOULD pull a 25" bar, but here's a good example, i was running a MS660 on an 8 tooth sprocket felling 4 foot Beech, it had a slight lean and i only just chased the cut out fully when it started to go. And that's a MUCH faster saw than the 460, horses for courses as they say. A 660 is the better saw in hardwood, i use the 460 on an 18 or 20 for snedding up and delimbing.
