Canker on Oak

Anyone seen canker in young Oaks before? I have two which have it and are suffering in a mixed native plantation which is about 15 years old.

I'm not so sure that's canker.

I have seen similar symptoms on 15 - 20 year old trees before.

The cause of the problem was a member of the woodworm family,

the little critters were burrowing in the sapwood area and causing the bark of the tree to give the impression of canker.

Have you cut into the infected areas and found any larva about 10mm in length?

Shall take my lil folding saw and cut a section off the smaller branches and will bring it home for further analysis with pictures.

Yes I've seen agrilus sp(?) borers do stuff like that, but never so big!

 

a boxcutter type knife will cut out a wedge with less damage than a saw would make.

 

the knotty stuff at the fork might be something else; could be cleaned i.e pluck out dead stuff to assess the damage.
