I saw this at work recently, taking down sycamore.. giant shears on the end of an excavator. They can shear through 9" or so, I believe. I heard they were charging it out at around £500 a day, or something.

My mate Dick has a shear on a bobcat it will cut through 14''. I personally can't see that much use for them, but thats just my opinion

The environment Agency use them ocassionally to clear willows from river banks. Its much safer having a shear on the end of a 20 ton excavator than a man in a boat with a chainsaw! Also seen them used to restore heathland, the machine will just shear a tree off swing round and drop on fire or in chipper its a lot less labour intensive!

It doesn't look very nature conservation friendly, but when these countryside officers see how much money they save from using it..it got those stems down a lot faster than you could fell them by chainsaw, even if they didn't get hung up.
