Does anyone know of any walkie talkie radios that would be good for use in a forest with a coverage of about 3-4 miles. Similar to another post here, I am working alone and in an area with no phone coverage. There is nothing between the house and the forest line of sight wise.I need to be able to check in now and again and am thinking of a radio that would work up to 4 miles away. If it worked with CB radio it could be handy too. Maybe have a home base at the house and a walkie with me. Does anyone use or know of something like this?

Thanks.

But surly if you have a mobile with gd comms and check in every hr or so shouldn't that be good enough. Since of there was a problem ud have to call emergency services anyway

Thanks Paul and Desertrat. Aye Desert, but we have poor phone coverage here. My phone works in less that 50% of the forest. Where I mostly work there is no signal..

2 miles are the cheap ones.

for 4 miles you'll an fm licence etc. plus those are expensive.

had a few motorola xtn 446 - they are good quality and light, cheap enough secondhand.

Do you know how much a licence is. Also anyone know what is the difference between UHF and VHF? I have a VHF licence for sailing though I think you are not allowed to use it from land for some reason.

I had a quick look into it a few months back. The cheap off the shelf jobs are about 1/2 a watt or something and crap ( good for kids to play with at the car boot ) the motorolas that need a licence alot more out put and work well about 5 watts I think.
