Surveyor position

There seems to always be these ua5 surveyors posts going! what is it, might go and do a ticket!

I've wondered that too, another string to the arboricultural bow.

I know BTS do training, but couldn't see a cost on their site. I've also no experience on power lines (couple of years railway cutting, does that count?) and wonder if the basic line safety ticket would be a prerequisite?

Does anyone know what is involved in terms of travel, pay, locations etc. (A PM would be good if no one is willing to discuss pay publicly)

How long does a ticket last? If I can make the course pay for itself I may well consider it...

Cheers all

Hi tony,

the position involves visiting sites that have been identified as a risk to the overhead line system in a recent resilience survey, reassessing the site, obtain permission for a removal where possible, if not suggesting alternatives to remove the hazard, arranging access etc details. There's quite a lot of paperwork and travel, and doesn't suit everyone. However it is regularly consistent work, the pay is OK and you are your own boss, operating almost completely independently, so it just depends what your looking for :001_smile:

thanks for this reply, thats an almost ideal situation for my future! time to look at this with serious effort.

any other tickets experience etc one would need? all the arranging paperwork travel etc is no issue at all as I already have run my own business for five years, and loved the dealing with accesses and people stuff, dont get that part now as an employee.

Prerequisite are Ua1+Ua2.1 and first aid. You also need to attend and pass an induction course before being able to work on the system. This can sometimes take a little while to arrange and unfortunately there is no nationally recognized qualification. There are several Distribution Network Operators around the country see this link for a map of which DNO's cover which areas.

ENA - Electricity distribution map

If you want any help in finding training/assessing please don't hesitate to pm me or give me a buzz on 07896730321, id be more than help

Thanks Barkin, my budget for CPD has been well and truly hammered for this season/year but next year, well I may just have to look at doing these, my retirement plan (semi!) just took a new angle!

No worries tony, glad to help.

Also, sorry omitted from last message

Ua1+Ua2.1 are prerequisites to UA5 Risk Assessor/Surveyors course. Some DNO's allow you to survey without UA5 as long as your experience and CV tick their boxes.

Your employer would arrange the induction for you, it may be worth getting in touch with a few in your area, if you were willing to put yourself through Ua1+first aid, they may be able to work something out with you from there.

Good luck, all the best and if you have any queries, please don't hesitate to ask, if I can help in any way id more than happy to, also please get in touch if you decide to go for it,

Dave
