Hilux Towing Capacity

Small article in the September 4x4 Magazine, page 87 (just opposite an article on my Ranger on page 86!!) regarding the towing capacity of the Toyota Hilux. Apparantly, Toyota's Technical Department have stated one of the ways they determine the towing capacity is by performing an emergency braking test and from this they calculate the ratio of towing weight to gross vehicle weight and 2250KG is the max weight allowed under their test based on the vehicle being used on a global basis.

Toyota GB have made a successful UK braking test with the Vehicle Certification Agency to increase the legal towing limit for double cabs and extra cabs to 2800KG. They therefore claim the Hilux can legally tow 2800KG in the UK - however they cannot market this as the warranty is provided through Toyota Motor Corp and they are not prepared to increase the weight as their test is a lot more challenging.

So whilst it can legally tow 2800, the warranty would be invalidated if an issue arose through the vehicle towing more than 2250.

Might be of interest to some of you.

On a similar note, I believe Mitsubishi refused to repair some blown engines on L200s that had been used for constant towing on the grounds that they specify shorter service intervals for vehicles that tow a lot.

Also worth checking out.

When I looked at buying a Hilux a few years back, I got different answers from every dealer I went to along with No answer from Toyota GB!

If its plated at 2800KG's then it can tow that legally!

A friend has a 3.0 Invincible DC, he buillds Horse jumping/eventing courses, so shifts a large Ifor trailer loaded with earth, timber, etc. He said he regularly hits the limit and off the public hiway often exceeeds that, without any problems!
