  1. 1. Why are'nt we heating our houses with woodchips?

    • Lack of Knowledge (what woodchip boiler? never heard of them)
    • Cost (damn things are to expensive)
    • Technical (my woodchips are the wrong size / shape / to dry / to wet)
    • Other reasons - please explain

only 1 machine in the whole of Hampshire capable of producing the chips...

This sounds like an opportunity to me, what are you waiting for........

You guys in Hampshire want to get up to the West of Scotland to see what successful woodchip supply-chains can produce.

Here are some case studies to whet your appetite:

Thought I'd get a discussion going on home heating with woodchips.

I'm sort of surprised that this is'nt a much bigger thing with tree surgeons, given the high gas / oil prices, and given we sit on an endless supply of free fuel.

I currently heat with logs, but after 30 odd years of doing so, I'm sick and tired of the work involved, especially when running the business takes so much time.

So I want an automated woodchip system, capable of combusting any old chips straight from my chippers.

Whats put me off so far is the high capital cost of units. I've been quoted anything up to £20,000, for a 30kw boiler!

So whats your thoughts? whats putting people off? Cost? Lack of knowledge?

Hi Ed, Thought I would keep this thread going.

Just been looking around all the chip and pellet ideas and seams that cost, size and fuel supply seam to be the problem.

I just got hold of a boiler (25kw) that is only 1 metre high and no wider then a standard kitchen cupboard. fueled by pellets but can use chips as long as they are small ,(timberwolf chipper size). £4500 x vat. also pellets delivered at around £160 ton. Now this type of simple boiler makes sense, no fancy electronics. easy to plumb into from standard domestic water system.

Fit this type of boiler your self and get your local plumber to connect and test. You need a hopper outside (or in if you got the room) and a small augur pipe up just above the boiler and then gravety feed down flexy pipe to the burner unit.

These units also have stored water tank so instant hot water for your shower when needed. This type of system now makes sense for the domestic and office markets. cheap, effecient, clean and easy to run.:001_cool:

What you think:001_smile:
