I have an old ford 3000 running a bench, having issues with it recharging it's self, the battery is fairly new and holds charge well. Placed multimeter on battery when tractor is running and there is no increase in voltage at terminals. I have put meter on dynamo and getting some strange results, what readings should I get from the dynamo to suggest that it is sending a charge to the battery. It's an early diesel by the way please help its driving me mad!!

Go to the local motor factor and get an alternator for a 1986 escort or allegro or similar. Basically as cheap as chips as long as it will fit. I bought a few bosch refurb alternators about 10 years ago for £7 ea. So now will be 20 -40 I have a 40 amp alt on our international which runs the processor because it runs for hrs it does not need a monster alt.

no i havent polarised it, the dynamo is new how do i polarise it?

Disconnect the small lucar terminal from the dynamo ( usually called the 'f' terminal)

Using a length of wire, connect this terminal of the dynamo to the battery live terminal for just a few seconds.

This polarises the field windings, allowing the regulator to control output.
