Tonight I will try again to make an eye splice in 16 strand rope, (XTC)

This will be my fifth attempt, I am using old rope which I should imagine makes it harder and a home made wire fid, the trouble I am having is it always gets stuck on the cross over, I am using Samsons class one instructions, 61" to make an eye splice!!

Everything goes fine until the crossover then I start to lose the plot:mad1:

Yup, the crossover is the hardest bit, especially with used rope. I have only done two or three, so I cant offer much in the way of help, only sympathy!

My take on 16 strand is to only climb on double braid, thereby eliminating the problem. Piano wire should make it easier, Nod gets piano wire fids made up for him, and they are excellent.

I like that thinking but I want to learn 16 strand and now it's personal.:mad1:

I can highly recommend a splicing workshop with Nod, even if you do crack that crossover with your new fids. It would add to your ability and knowledge, and if you understand the basics before doing the workshop, then so much the better.

Yeah, I am planning on visiting Nod in February if he gets enough people interested in the course.

be careful not to catch the wire fid on the core when feeding it threw, when pulling the new core threw pull the old core also, on some ropes removeing some of the new cores strands helps. I hope that makes some sence!

if you can get hold of the Donaghys Spark 16 strand rope will you will find it the easiest rope in the world to splice bar none. but i imagine getting hold of some will be the problem! and good luck with the splicing.

after a bit of cursing and practice it comes. i find when doing the final taper remove slightly more than you think.
