diesel - one cheaper to source second hand units, and two we had a gas one running a forage drier and it was unrelieable and more difficult to repair yourself in desperation on a sunday afternoon.

But I hold my hands up I prefer diesel to any other fuel as its farmer proof really!

When diesel would last longer than a few months... diesel. Not so sure now. Unless it was a regular outage and kicking in quickly was a necessity I would probably now opt for a PTO unit. One less engine to service and at least the diesel is getting refreshed regularly.

Gas better for the enviroment. Possibly cheaper to run. Personally I run a mile from gas stuff unreliable especially if left for weeks without running. susceptable to damp. Diesel system stays wet and does not seize up like all those alloy valves and butterflys in a gas system. We have not had as many problems as we thought we would with the new bio diesel you just need to be on to of your tank house keeping.

That's great Steve, just what I am looking for .

Am I better keeping tank as full as possible with winter diesel or small amounts and top up?

I had diesel problems when I stopped using so much a few year back in the Mog and the tank got an Alfgie.

There is an additive available to add to summer fuel comes in 5 litres and treats 2000 litres. If I still have some summer diesel left in october I shove some in. If its a standby genset you can still get the non bio stuff for it. Its the only legal use for it now. If its running regular you should turn the fuel over quick enough to stop it going stale. Most fuel suppliers will deliver 500 litres at a time. drain your fuel tank down if you can get into tank mop the bottom out with some bathroom towels it does not need to be spot less just get the inch of water and rust out which seems to be in the bottom of alot of tanks. Its the water which helps the algi to form. We have a small racor filter unit which seperates the water and has a cleanable filter in the top, small pacet fuel pump purrs away and after 10 mins 25 litres of clean fuel.

we've not had as many problems with biodiesel as we thought either, all the choppers and combines seemed to be fine left over winter. After all the hype it doesn't seem to have been half as bad. I reckon its worse at pulling paint off things though, our diesel bowser seems to have lost more paint recently than before where a bit gets spilt getting the nozzle in and out.

Looks like your off to buy a diesel then stevie!
