NHBS - Collins Fungi Guide - Buczacki, Stefan|Shields, Chris|Ovenden, Denys

The newest edition is out, does anyone have it? How does it compare to its very comprehensive predecessor (as won in the guess the close up thread, cheers Hama  ) ?

Haven't bought this one myself, as I've been put off due to the criticism of the illustrations, by members of the mycology fraternity.

Interesting, is it not photographic then? I'm not one for the 'classic' illustrated ID books...

Some colours on the illustrations are not true to type and the text doesn't give the cap colour apparantly.

As a first book, i'd imagine it is a fine resource though as there are around 2400 species listed, but not if its just for updating.

Agree with Tony that the earlier edition is more than adequate as a field guide.

Together with the fungi app of course

That why I'm not keen on illustrations, a photo says a thousand words!

I don't have the app as I already have the Rogers one; why should I get the arbtalk app as well? (ready, steady, sell!) :sly:

Didn't think it was the place for the hard sell, but as you asked

The Arboristapp fungi ID guide is designed to be 'Tree' specific where as Rogers' is a resource that encompases all habitat relationships (grass/sand etc....) & is also weighted toward cullinary useage.

If you were interested in a field tool that is aimed specifically at Arboriculture, (which helps to identify parasitic, saprophytic & mycorrhizal species) then thats the niche where the Arborist fungi app has been designed to focus on.

at two hundred & ninety nine pennies, I think you get a lot of product for something that's a dynamically evolving resource with galleries being added & updated to, on a regular basis :thumbup1:
