If there are roots a handheld post auger will be awful to use as it will wrench everytime it hits a root, if they are small roots use a mattock, any bigger might be worth hiring a mini digger to dig the roots out- they are surprisingly cheap to hire and save a lot of graft.

Never seen holes dug with a stumpgrinder:001_tt2:

I've dug some handsome holes with a stumpgrinder.:001_tt2:

Granted, you'd need a shed load of concrete to make a post stand up for any length of time.:lol:

If you are going to get a post hole borer try and get the one one wheels that is hydraulic as it will save your wrists being snapped if you hit heavy routes

'tis a piece of weewee. Just pull the hedge out starting at one end, then pulling the others the same way. Then dig the holes with a fence spade and a post hole digger. Chop straight through the roots. If you can't dig the holes like that for a few bays of fencing then you're probably too weak to lift the posts up anyway :001_tongue:

Augers and stuff for a few 8 or 9 foot posts..... :girl:
