You should be more concerned with the weight distribution, crew cabs put the heavy stuff over and beyond the centre of the rear axle which leads to axle overloads, even when the vehicle itself isn't over on the gross.

I dont know about transits but when I was looking at LDV (I have a weight chart somewhere) the tool box option was IIRC 100kgs light than a double cab but that would have included the seats.

Surely a tool box would do the same? i.e push the tipping section further back?

Not really, because a crew cab is designed to seat people it has to conform to space standards and meet encap tests and suchlike. Taking out seats and putting a saw or three in a space designed to accommodate three bulky blokes leaves a lot of wasted space.

A tool locker can be a lot narrower since it only needs to be the width of a saw. A better idea is putting them on the chassis rail under the tipper bed.

But what if you havent got three bulky blokes one day? Wasted space?

I think we should stick to the original question, I dont think he was bothered about axle weights, but (going by the clues) I think he wanted to know about the difference in weights of a double cab or (by my understanding) one with a roller shutter tool locker.

Well you don't know that he's not bothered about axle weights. He seems concerned about weight. At about a pound a kilo for overloading and possibly a GV9, I know I am.

I would like to think that armed with that information the double cab as a toolbox idea losses some of it's attraction.

It's easy enough to run overloaded without buying a vehicle that invites overloading. Crew cabs are great for moving crew, not so good as a tool locker.
