Depends what friction device your using, and what you want to lower with it.

Go for the smallest rope diameter that will safely do what you want it to do.

Hobbs and grcs will take big loads and big ropes, portys work better with smaller ropes and loads.

ISC cast alloy blocks are the best if you do any heavy rigging or dynamic loading

16mm is pretty standard, make sure you use a good quality. I would recomend a braided rope over a 3 strand, a good 50/50 double braid will give you both long life and strength due to 50% of the material being in the cover. As steve says Double Esterlon is a good option, a Polyester like Donaghys Rhino is a good cheaper option.
