Climbers with knee injuries, knee guards?

Not just being a girl wanting to wear pads (honest :001_tt2:) but I was wondering if anyone wears knee pads for climbing?

 

I have a buggered right knee from an old kickboxing injury (cartilage) and after a fast swing into a stem a few weeks back it triggered the pain again, could'nt walk properly for about a week and its still not right now.

 

Strapping it up supports it but obviously doesn't protect against impact, so am thinking about getting a pad for it but don't won't to restrict my climbing obviously.

 

I can grit my teeth and climb through the pain but don't want to be a cripple before I'm 25 :lol:

i snapped the ACL in my left knee and did a load of other damage too

i tried wearing an ACL brace that i wear while skating etc but it just got really sweaty with the combination of the trousers

try the think neoprane knee supports, you can pick up nice ones at sports direct and places like that

You'd do better to consult a specialist and build up the supporting and antagonistic muscles. Wearing a support will encourage the muscles to atrophy and will do you no good in the longer term.

Mosts stresses on knee joints when climbing are twisting so a pad won't do a great deal of good.

Also, check out your boots, trainers and shoes and make sure they are all wearing level. It may be worth seeing a podiatrist to check your feet as this has a great effect on the way your knees and hips wear.

I have had 2 ops on my right knee for torn cartilage, one 16 years ago to stitch in back together, and one 2 years ago to shave off a small tear.

 

Hasnt stopped me climbing, footlocking, or anything else really, and the only time I have properly locked the knee up and been in agony in the tree was during my CS38 assessment while lowering a casualty. Managed to finish the rescue and pass the assessment.

 

Wearing a knee support wont help you in the long run imo, better off doing some exercises to strengthen and stabilise the knee. Do some reading up online or go see a physio, or both.

I had the same injury last year torn knee cartlidge in both knees, one playing rugby the other doing bjj, saw my Docter who luckily is a sports injury specialist, had an MRI scans done then had key hole surgery took a while from scan to op, but was in and out before 12 with the op two weeks off and the jobs sorted :laugh1:

It's one of them things that's not worth putting up with mate.
