Personally i dont think there is a major issue if they are supervised but if they can go off and play with it by themselves then there is.

It is all about education and trust.

My garage is full of sharp and dangerous stuff and my son has always had access however he knows what he is allowed to do and when and the consequences of breaching that trust

Daughter tell her dont touch she never will, lad well as soon as your backs turned he will touch it, one thing about kids they are all different.

I got him a small axe when he was 12, cuts wood in the garden supervised
