Deerman, it has never happened to me, not saying it never will, but how would a half hitch not be able to loosened if the piece rolls?

 

Rich, I don't think a half hitch would bite but it would have to be tensioned and tended by the groundie. Not a real problem just means he's hanging onto the rope with potentially big bits coming down.

It rarely need much real tension, a really good pull by a decent groundie would do it, then go back on itself and tie it off as a cow hitch (or part cow hitch without the better half hitch) and then no need to hold on so tight.

 

Or an opposing half hitch, or whatever you fancy, no need to get clever with it.
