You may however learn the wrong nuts & bolts! This could be very dangerous & may even lead to an accident? You hone with time but if you learn correctly from the start at least you can tell tell the good advice from the bad! Some of our trainees after doing the Proclimber Fast Track course are more competent than some who have been out there doing the job for years, even without the experience!

Learn the correct way then go out & get your experience, you will be safer, more confident & know you are doing the job right.

Really interesting thread, I think the main thing employers look for is climbing and cutting ability, 30 31 38 39 is enough to start with.

You learn to pass your tickets then you go to climb and cut at work properly. I only know a couple of climbers who climb by the book and are quick

I did most of my training and assessments with proclimber, CS 32, 38, 39, 40 & 41, not on the fast track course but over 2 years. I also sat in with one of the Fast Track courses on the theory part of the course 6 days over about 4 weeks, it is an introduction to the knowledge required for the ISA Certified Arborist. I continued with the studies and passed the ISA exam 6 months later. I highly recommend Proclimber Training and their trainers.

  • 3 weeks later...

Many years back I did my NPTC rigging, medium fell etc with Proclimber and found the training excellent:thumbup1:.

A friend of mine did the fast track course a few years back. After gaining some good experience (approx 12months) with a local tree surgeon he then managed to get a job with the Local Authority as an arborist. I have spoken to the Local Authority as there was some competition for the vacancy and their view was if someone is willing to commit 5k on training they must really want to work in the industry. I guess this is true for many but not for all.

If I was new entering the Arb industry I would have strongly considered attending the Proclimber fast track course.

There are many very professional tree surgeons out there who work to excellent standards who will be prepared to teach you on the job. We are not all cowboys!

On one of my climbing courses I was the only one who stuck the course as the 3 others found out they were either scared of heights or it wasn't for them. They spent their money and left on day 1!
