Fungi Ident

Good afternoon.

Can anybody advise as to what this fungi is? One of my employees found it on what is either a sycamore or an ash in Scotland. It appears to be on dead / dysfunctional wood. Any help would be greatly recieved.

Looks like ustulina

The avatar picture is the internal decay from Ustulina on Sycamore.

On ash it could be Daldinia concentrica, its hard to tell from the pic bit if you get up close Kretzschmaria (Ustulina) deusta will be crispy like tarry soot where as if you cut open Daldinia there are concentric rings visible.

BTW Kretzshmaria is usually found near ground level.

So it does, which makes Kretzschmaria the more likely., never seen it up high before, how high is that?

you sure, those fat black buds look like Ash to me, maybe they aren't connected to the trunk with what looks like ustilina or whatever its called now ........

Looks like syccy to me also.....

The fruit bodies of Kretzschmaria are quite discreet and perhaps easily overlooked...appearing in clefts between butresses and perhaps covered by grass as was said above, usually low on the stem ( the decay can affect upto 4m up the stem however) As they spread to form a stroma as big as 50cms...They will also appear on dead woody material....

It has two forms, perfect form ( sexual & black) and a second manifestation, asexual or "imperfect" which is often greyish turning yellowish/whitish and becoming powdery.....

Looks like it to me but would concur that online id is often quite misleading for various reasons....hope this helps.

Maybe i'm seeing things, but aren't there black buds visible in the first picture, haven't got me specs on sorry, the truck looks like a sycamore.....oh i'm off to for a lay down...
