Ive grown rather fond of them, they have this habit of being so discreet in the landscape, then come autumn they stand out like beacons screaming for you to notice them. Found a whopper last year, Do you know anywhere that they are larger and more common than "usual"? be an interesting tree to see as the dominant ecological niche in its zone so to speak.

I guess one of the most amazing things about the site at the top of the thread (which I forgot to say) is,

that its slap bang next to one of the most strategic American Airforce bases outside of the USA.

 

Some 16,000 personell are stationed there and its home to the 100th Air Refuelling Wing.

 

Not such a great neighbour really (biodiversity wise)

Its quite amazing that these trees are still going so strong.

it is probably WHY they survived, had this base gone after the war development would have followed and gone would the last of these oaks be. It is already in progress

Not thinking interms of the historic preservation of the site & trees (They're tpo'd apparantly) more thinking about the atmospheric pollutants off and above the base. (Like Stanstead & Hatfield)
