440 flooding will not start

Hi guys I have a 2006 440 stihl which I have used for years as only saw for first 3 years of doing this job. Now it only comes out on just in case jobs, ie if it's bigger than my 261 will handle then the 660 or 880 come out.

If I attempt tomstartbthe 440 and she fires then I'm away but have to keep her running as if she dies on tick over she may not go again. If I miss the initial start up fire and pull it again she floods and that's it for the day then. No matter how much drying of the plug I do makes her go.

Any ideas on how I can make her a bit more reliable again?

Ah, well it's a simple place to start thank you. Will pop one on the shopping list.

Couple of things - has the saw good compression? When you have the saw on the fast idle choke setting and the saw starts, does it have a decent fast idle? Sometimes the fast idle doesn't hold the throttle to open as much as it should.

 

If when starting the saw blurps on full choke and you slip it on to fast idle to start it and it doesn't go in three pulls, try holding the throttle wide open and pull the starter with the left hand - not by the book but if the saw fires it is probably this fast idle mechanism.

 

It is possible the L setting is a bit rich!

Spudulike, that is the kind of experienced answer I was hoping id get on here. I will try starting and operating the throttle if I have trouble and see how I get on. Thank you.
