hi,

 

was just wondering if rock climbing harnesses were ok to use for tree climbing on a recreational basis.

 

at what age would you recommend a child goes from full body harness to a normal harness.

I moved my daughters over to 'ordinary harnesses' quite early (6 yrs). I found that the body harness, whilst keeping them upright, didn't allow the movement (lying back, reaching out sideways etc) that they wanted. It has a very high, and safe, attachment point.

So I used a xxs climbing harness and a simple chest sling prussiced to the line with which I was able to limit the amount invertedness they experienced.

so rock climbing harnesses can be used for adults and children when it comes to climbing trees. I would assume they have the same e.n or Ce weight strength etc

It wont be very comfortable, they aren't really designing for sitting in for any length of time. Other than that I see no reason why not

The petzl arborists harnesses are not that dissimilar to rock climbing harnesses anyway.

I use a rock harness - it's a DMM Renegade sit harness, and is actually very comfortable. At end of day, for recreational tree climbing you're not going to be sitting in the harness for long periods of time anyway.

Any harness can be used for climbing. It is a different story when used in the work place.

Yep, I do. No concerns with it whatsoever. It's rated to 25kN so I think if I should fall with enough force to break it, it probably wouldn't be worth me living!

 

It's obviously not a work positioning harness as it lacks side rings, but for climbing it's really comfortable, and I have used it for work a few times as well and been more than happy with it.

 

I bought mine from "Fell and Mountain" for under £50.
